7 Frugal Grocery Shopping Tips

Every mum has a lot to do; chores and errands never seem to stop, or at least slow down. For many mothers, eating healthy food helps fuel those many activities that never seem to end. Considering these factors, food should be reasonably priced. Here are a few tips on frugal shopping.

Review Circulars
Pay close attention to stores that offer items on sale. Before you head to your nearest grocery store, browse through your local daily for special offers. If you do not have time to go through a newspaper, you can pick fliers at the store’s entrance. Most stores advertise items on sale using fliers.

Chop and Freeze
If an item that you eat often goes on sale you can buy extra and freeze. Do this for fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those with low water content. Chop the food, store in an airtight container and freeze it. One of the advantages of chopping and freezing food is that it reduces preparation time. Frozen vegetables can be thawed, cooked and served with stew, soup or chili. Frozen fruits can be served with smoothies, baked dishes and easy desserts.

Shop the Perimeter
When shopping for groceries avoid the interior aisle of the grocery store where frozen food is usually stored. Instead, shop at the store’s perimeter where fresh milk and other dairy products are usually stored.

shopCheck Unit Prices
Pay special attention to unit prices. You can save significant amounts of money by buying in bulk than buying by one or two items. For example, cheese is cheaper when bought as a block than when shredded, cubed or sliced. You can buy cheese blocks and chop or shred on your own.

Make a List
Make a list of the items you need before heading to the grocery store. Having a list does not just help you avoid impulse buying, but it also gives you an idea of the food items that you need to purchase.

Avoid Brand Loyalty
While loyalty is highly appreciated in your personal and professional life it shouldn’t feature in your shopping habits. For example, you can buy cheaper products using coupons and save money instead of buying other brands at higher prices. Coupons are available for all types of groceries including fresh milk (get fresh milk free delivery service here), vegetables and eggs. You can even get free products with high-value coupons.

Make Meals from Scratch
Making meals from scratch is cheaper and healthier. For example, making your own sauce by combining fresh ingredients is cheaper and healthier than buying packaged, pre-made sauces.
